The Clear Creek Suite
(#7)
King Bed, Sitting Room, Extra Large Private
Bathroom with
Antique Clawfoot Tub and Shower, Cable Television & Free Wireless Internet Access,
Antique Silvertone Radio, Central Heat and Air
Conditioning, Rollaway Bed overlooking beautiful Clear Creek.

One of
our largest and most elegant suites, lavishly
decorated and
furnished in Edwardian style. From
the high windows, you will
look down on beautiful
Clear Creek flowing past the hotel.
Many years ago, this
sparkling creek was the southern
boundary of the Crow Indian hunting
grounds. Early
explorers and settlers called it the Clear Fork
of Powder
River. Today, it provides the gentle rush of water
that will lull you to sleep as it flows east to join
Powder River.
The King Bed is a unique
six-poster Cherry Wood bed
that is original to the hotel, with a
very comfortable
California pillow-top mattress. The extra
large
bathroom boasts an enormous antique clawfoot
bathtub, original
to the hotel, that is big enough for two.
Summer Rate: $185 per night
(May 1 to September 15)
Winter Rate: $125 per night (September 16 to April 30)

The Hole-in-the-Wall Hideout
(#9)
Queen Bed, Unique Private "Water Closet" Bathroom
with antique Clawfoot Tub, Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
1934 Balkeit Antique Radio, Central Heat
and Air Conditioning,
overlooking Clear Creek.

This cozy Edwardian room is
named after the famous Hole-in-the-
Wall hideout of Butch Cassidy and
the Wild Bunch. Like the
outlaw's getaway spot, the room has a "red
rock" wall and plenty of
privacy. Secluded at the back of the
hotel, it overlooks a
tree-shaded portion of swift-flowing Clear
Creek.
(It's so close to the creek
that some of our guests have
actually caught fish from one of the
windows!)
The bathroom was the second
private bathroom in the hotel. The
comfortable antique clawfoot tub and other "facilities" are
tucked away in a large
closet, with double doors that can
be closed for complete privacy.
It's really what the
Victorians used to call a "Water Closet."
Many of our regular guests
have fallen in love with the offbeat
ambience and privacy of the
Hideout ... and with its very
reasonable price.
Summer Rate: $125 per night
(May 1 to September 15)
Winter Rate: $80 per night (September 16 to April 30)

The Teddy Roosevelt Suite
(#11)
Queen Bed, Large Separate Sitting Room,
Spacious Private
Bathroom with Antique Clawfoot Tub and Shower,
Cable
Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
1942 Silverstone Antique Radion, Central Heat
& Air Conditioning

In his youth, the 26th President of the United States was a rancher
in the West. And when he came to hunt in the Big Horn
Mountains, he
stayed at the best hotel in Buffalo - The Occidental.
In those
days, The Occidental was already known far and wide as one
of
the best hotels in the West.
After he retired from the Presidency, Roosevelt visited Wyoming on
several occasions. And local lore relates that he actually
stayed in
one of the rooms that now make up the elegant Roosevelt
Suite.
The bedroom showcases a handsome high-backed Victorian Walnut
Bed,
original to the hotel, with a superb Queen pillow-top mattress.
The view from the west window is of ancient leafy cottonwoods
and
tall pines in summer, and of the majestic peaks of the Big Horn
Mountains in Winter.
A separate sitting room provides a large and relaxed setting for
reading and conversation, and an antique desk for writing letters.
The bathroom is a Victorian gem, with a large clawfoot tub
and
shower, and beautifully restored period decor.
Summer Rate: $185 per night
(May 1 to September 15)
Winter Rate: $125 per night (September 16 to April 30)

The General Sheridan
(#12)
King Bed, Sitting Area, Private Bathroom
with
Easy-access Tub and Shower, Cable Television
& Free Wireless
Internet Access,
1933 Philco Antique Radio, Central Heat and Air Conditioning.

During the Great Sioux War,
General Phillip H. Sheridan was
the commander of the Division of the Missouri
-
a territory
that included northern Wyoming. As it happened,
most of the
important battles of the Sioux War took place in
northern Wyoming
and southern Montana, and for that reason
a fort was established at
the foot of the Big Horn mountains after
the war was over, to help
keep the peace.
The fort was called Fort
McKinney, and the town of Buffalo
grew up close to it. The
first building in Buffalo - and always
the finest hotel - was The
Occidental Hotel.
Named in honor of General Sheridan, this room is furnished
with antiques that are original to the hotel, including a splendid
brass bed with a fine king-size pillow-top mattress. The
bathroom features a large easy-access tub and shower,
embellished with a rich cedar lining.
Summer Rate: $165 per night
(May 1 to September 15)
Winter Rate: $100 per night (September 16 to April 30)

The
President Hoover Suite (#55)
Queen Bed, Large Separate Sitting Room, Private Bathroom
with Antique Clawfoot Tub and Shower, Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
Antique Zenith Radio, Central Heat and Air
Conditioning,
Pet Friendly
The 31st President of
the United States stayed at the Occidental
Hotel in the summer of
1932, when he was still President. He was in
Wyoming running
for re-election (a race that he lost to Franklin Delano
Roosevelt in
November of that year.)
The register of the hotel
shows that the President stayed in one of
the rooms that are now a
part of the President Hoover Suite. And old
timers who
remembered his visit have told us that he very much enjoyed
his stay
at the Occidental. Photographs from the period show a smiling
President greeting local residents in the lobby of the hotel.
The suite is located on the
ground floor of the hotel. The bed is a lovely
brass and iron
antique with a fine pillow-top mattress. The bathroom is
small, but comfortable (it includes the same tub that was here in
1932).
The bedroom and the large sitting room are both paneled
with the original
wainscoting, and decorated in authentic period
style.
Summer Rate:
$135 per night (May 1 to September 15)
Winter Rate: $90
per night (September 16 to April 30)

The Rose
Suite (#16)
King Bed, Sitting Area, Private Bathroom
with easy-access
Shower, Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
1932 Antique Philco Jr. Radio,
Rollaway Bed,
Central Heating and Air Conditioning
Overflowing with
warmth and charm, this large suite is
decorated throughout in romantic rose tones. The
120-year-old four-poster wooden
bed
has a wonderfully comfortable pillow-top
King-size mattress.
The two beautiful antique dressers in the suite are original to the hotel,
as are the oil paintings and many other decorations.
The enigmatic Portrait of a Lady oil painting that hangs at
the head of the bed has been mystifying guests
at the Occidental since 1880. Perhaps you can figure
out what she is thinking.

The Cottonwood Suite
(#4)
King Bed, Sitting Room, Extra-large Private Bathroom
with easy-access cedar-lined Tub and Shower, Dressing Room,
Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
1946 Antique Gilfillian Radio, Central Heating and Air Conditioning,
overlooking Clear Creek.
Named for the ancient cottonwood
trees that grow along
the banks of Clear Creek, this
exceptionally spacious suite
combines a feeling of historic elegance with
all the comforts of home.
The King-size four-poster bed is one of the most unique in
the hotel. If you look closely at the side boards, you will
see
the drilled holes where ropes were anchored to support a
straw-filled mattress in the 19th Century. Today, of course,
the ropes and straw have been replaced by a high-quality
innerspring and wonderful pillow-top mattress.

September 15)

The Owen Wister Suite #32
Queen Bed, Private Fireplace, Writing Room,
Extra-large
Private
Bathroom with antique Clawfoot Tub and Shower,
Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access,
1938 Antique Philco Radio, Heating and Air Conditioning. Balcony overlooking Historic Main Street.
As many historians have noted, "The Virginian" was
the first
great Western novel - and the author found
many of his most
striking characters among the cowboys and outlaws that
he observed at the Occidental Hotel.
It is even said that Owen Wister actually wrote portions of
"The Virginian" while staying in one of our best rooms
at the Occidental.
In keeping with Wister's reputation as a lover of life's
finer things, the Owen Wister Suite is furnished throughout
with some of the most beautiful Victorian furnishings and
fittings in the entire hotel. Everything in the bedroom -
from the carved bed and matching dresser, to the private
fireplace, to the wall coverings and crystal chandelier -
harks back to the fabled "Gilded Age."
In the bathroom, the antique clawfoot tub and shower,
and the other "conveniences" as well, are actually
raised up on a pedestal (and life doesn't get any
more "gilded" than that!)
We think that Mr. Wister would feel right at home. And
we think that you will, too!

to September 15)
Winter Rate: $125 per night (September 16 to April 30)

The Bordello Suite (#23)
3 Separate Bedrooms with Queen Beds, Fireplace in
Master Bedroom, Private Bathroom with antique Clawfoot Tub
and Shower, Cable Televisions in all Bedrooms
& Free Wireless
Internet
Access, 1948 Teletone Antique
Radio & 1930 Antique Majestic Radio, Heat and Air Conditioning.

To put it as
delicately as we can, the Occidental hotel
in the early days was always a "full service" hotel.
When cowboys came into town following a month or more
of punching cows on the range, they had several things on
their minds - a luxurious hot bath, a soft bed, a great
meal, a few drinks (at least), a game (or two) of chance,
and perhaps ... if time permitted ... a little
tender companionship.
Without endorsing such behavior, we are forced to observe
that the Occidental offered some of the finest facilities in the
Old West for tender companionship. And in that spirit, we
have restored the "red" rooms of the hotel to their former
hidden splendor, complete with original crystal chandeliers
and other appropriate decor.

The Outlaw Suite (#19)
2 Separate Bedrooms, with Queen Bed and Fireplace in Master Bedroom, 2 Twin Beds in Second Bedroom, Extra-Large Private Bathroom with Antique Clawfoot Tub and Shower, Cable Television
& Free Wireless Internet Access, 1934 Antique Crosley Radio,
Heating and Air Conditioning
Located on a branch of the famed Outlaw
Trail, The
Occidental hotel inevitably played host to many of the most
famous outlaws of the Old West
- and to many of the lawmen
who were chasing after them.
Often, outlaws would rob trains or banks in Colorado or
Utah, and then head north into Wyoming to escape. Many of
them would use the branch of the Outlaw Trail that ran along
the eastern edge of the Big Horn Mountains - because it allowed
them to take advantage of excellent hideouts in the rugged
Hole-in-the-Wall country, south of Buffalo.
Sometimes, after a big train robbery, the outlaws could be
carrying a great deal of money. It was not unusual for a train
robbery to yield $10,000 to $50,000 in loot. (In today's
money,
that would be the equivalent of $200,000 to $1 million!)
From Hole-in-the-Wall, it was an easy one-day ride to the
gambling houses, saloons, and other recreational facilities of
Buffalo. And the finest destination in Buffalo for all of
these
activities was always the Occidental Hotel.
